mice make me happy
I spent too much time at the keyboard today.  I was coding today. Instant messaging got turned off AGAIN at work so I whipped up a few different apps at work. The first used the built-in XP peer-to-peer networking stack & WCF. It was pretty slick except that the p2p support and .NET 3.0 required admin rights to install since it wasn’t enabled on the image. That’s fine for...

telecommuting is hard
I often think to myself how wonderful it would be to work from home. It’s especially easy to be caught up in the glamour on sunny days or even wintery days when the traffic is bad. Who wouldn’t want to be able to sit on the couch, eat and drink anything in the house and work all day on the couch in his or her pajamas. I wouldn’t. I’ve read about people who work from home...

old man joe
I think I’m going to have to call off work tomorrow. I can barely move after playing football yesterday - sore everywhere. I’m an old man.

sad sad sad - first night alone
It’s amazing how lonely a night alone can be after 4 months of not being apart. I feel like I’m consulting again. Melissa is down in Columbus visiting family and I decided to stay back and get some stuff done. I don’t think it was the right decision. Good thing the Indians are playing tonight. That’ll give me something to do.

inexpensive experimentation
I don’t think I’ve written of my love for popcorn. At some point over the past two years I’ve become addicted to popcorn. Costco made what started as an occasional treat into a pure household staple. What other food can I buy 12 pounds of for 3 dollars. Popcorn never gets old. I’m experimenting with some chili powder tabasco sauce popcorn. The air popper keeps it healthy....

food happiness
Happiness is coming home to a bowl of baked pita chips, swiss cheese dip, roasted chicken, home made stuffing and broccoli - all on a week night. Good food tonight followed up with good brownies. Melissa called in sick today from work and treated me to some awesome food after class. It feels like fall lately. We dipped below 50 degrees last night and it’s been raining consistently. This is...

smelly drain
My hands are dry and stink. I just spent the last 45 minutes plungering, draino-ing and snaking the bathtub drain. To be completely clear, I actually didn’t use the draino but the draino had already been applied. In the end, the snake didn’t work and the plunger worked like a miracle. The trick to the plunger was to take out the drain stopper overflow thing and then plug the pipe with...

50 miles and accounting solutions manuals
yesterday was a great day. i biked a new route to meet melissa for lunch. it was 50 miles round trip. the distance was good but the heat was pretty bad. it broke 90 yesterday. i ended up taking a different, flatter route back that took me through some sketchy neighborhoods. that only made me go faster. i forgot how great three day weekends are. i miss that part of consulting. i found the...

bankers hours and holidays
Happy Columbus Day! What might seem like yet another worthless holiday is actually quite high on my list. I have no attachment to day other than the fact that it’s a celebrated bank holiday. Bank holidays and bankers hours are such a treat. I’m planning on spending the day going on a long bike ride - 40+ miles hopefully and then completely reversing the effect by eating wings and...

weekend posts are tough
i almost feel like just writing “first post”. i waited too long to write today…. we had a great day though. it was a phenomenally productive cleaning day such that we got all our chores done early and were able to relax the later half of the day. the boat is out of the garage, the floors are washed and the garage is organized to the point that two cars fit again. we’re both...

casual friday not so casual
Boss: Are those tennis shoes?
Joe: No, these are.... green dress shoes!
Boss: You can't wear tennis shoes
Joe: Well, I knew I would have to run to the bus and I wanted to make sure I'd get to it on time without injuring myself
Boss: So you did it on purpose?
Joe: How about I take some printer paper and color it brown and tape it to my shoes
Boss: You can't wear tennis shoes

what a morning!
Hah. You thought i was going to write about this morning. NOT SO FAST. I’m going to write about yesterday since I didn’t get a chance to after being hacked by the 1992 5lo virus. It occurred to me yesterday how that people who wear sunglasses over eyeglasses are really kinda creepy. One such chap decided to sit next to me on the bus. He even asked me to move my bag so that he...

h4x0r!
I’d feel much less shame if I was hacked by a cooler virus. Oh no, not me. My machine is taken down by 5lo, a virus from 1992. My virus software did more damage than the virus. It quarrantined critical operating system files so now my laptop won’t boot. Thanks Norton. You really saved me on that one. This reminds me of the importance of backing data up. My data is still safe but only...

celery hearts make me happy
I’m enjoying a pre-cut, washed celery stalk from Costco at the moment. It came in bag of four hearts for $2.50. I used to think that celery hearts were a rip off but this bag is a great value for the quality. I don’t even feel the need to wash the stalks - they’re that clean. dear tenant - our lease agreement said that rent was due on the 1st. this is the second month in a row...

new coffee in the office, jPod
I’m really enjoying our new coffee in the office. I think it’s a hazelnut blend. I like to pretend that I can actually distinguish between the various *nut blends of coffee but I can’t. Maybe that will come when I mature to the point of differentiating between various white and red wine types. I can tell the difference in a blind taste test between red and white wine. Ya,...

I’ve been thinking about human powered vehicles lately. I really enjoy biking in the warmer weather. I’m not looking forward to winter and having to bike exclusively in the basement. Perhaps the wikipedia article on human powered transport can offer some alternatives.
